Who Is the Janki Ballabh Shastri?

Acharya Janki Ballabh Shastri (5 February 1916 – 7 April 2011) was an Indian Hindi poet, writer, and critic. He declined to accept Padma Shri in 2010 stating his disciples deserved much more than Shri.[1] He also refused the Padmashri in 1994.

Among his famous works are “Bandi Mandiram”, “Kakali” “Radha” (an epic running in seven volumes), Roop Aaroop, Teer Tarang, Meghgeet, “Gaatha”, Pashani, Tamsa, Iravati, “Kalidas” (Novel), “Ek Kiran so Jhaian” (Short Stories), “Trai” and “Unkaha Niral”.

किसने बांसुरी बजाई

जनम-जनम की पहचानी वह तान कहां से आई !
किसने बांसुरी बजाई

अंग-अंग फूले कदंब सांस झकोरे झूले
सूखी आंखों में यमुना की लोल लहर लहराई !
किसने बांसुरी बजाई

जटिल कर्म-पथ पर थर-थर कांप लगे रुकने पग
कूक सुना सोए-सोए हिय मे हूक जगाई !
किसने बांसुरी बजाई

मसक-मसक रहता मर्मस्‍थल मरमर करते प्राण
कैसे इतनी कठिन रागिनी कोमल सुर में गाई !
किसने बांसुरी बजाई

उतर गगन से एक बार फिर पी कर विष का प्‍याला
निर्मोही मोहन से रूठी मीरा मृदु मुस्‍काई !
