The Baby Poem By Rex Wilder

The Baby Poem By Rex Wilder

“Doesn’t it break your heart,”
she said to her husband one morning,
“that he’s going to die one day?”
(The future, until now a silent letter, was pronounced.)
The new parents resolved to make
the present a migration towards that
original silence, and vain
progress was made, as if they were rowing
a boat across a lake to a restaurant
they didn’t know had closed down.
